Title work- font

Now that i have chosen the title (Retro) i need to choose a font that displays the meaning and reflects the themes of the magazine.

I will create multiple font possibilities and again take this to my target audience to see which looks more professional, and most appealing to the eye.

I asked 10 people that conform to my target audience what they thought of the possible fonts. All of them decided that the first front was the best one to use. As it was easy to read, it looked 'old fashioned' yet modern enough to look conventional on a music magazine.  Now I will chose what colour would stand out the best:

Again i showed these to my example target audience- The feedback was that the red was the best colour to use as:
Black- didn't stand out and looked to 'boring'
Blue- The shade appeared to modern
Pink- isn't a uni-sex colour as it sterotypically a female colour
red- unisex and a strongly used colour for 'retro' related items

Title work

The next stage now that i have completed the cover image is to create a name for the masthead. I will ask my target audience, what they think i should call the magazine, what font and what colour should be.

As other music magazines that i have researched have a related title to the genre of music, i will try and design a title that is catchy, music related but slightly related to the old music theme.

possible names:

  • Retro
  • Tune
  • icon

Out of an audience of 10;
8 said retro
1 said tune
and 1 said icon

So, i will call it retro. It sounds related to the genre i have chosen, and is short like a masthead should be.The title retro still enables a range of 'old' music so many eras can be featured in the magazine.

Final image

I based my chosen image on this one of Marilyn Monroe- I wanted to recreate the image as it was an interesting image which i believed would be a strong image for a front cover.

This was my first shoot- which didn't have the right 'look'- as the pose wasn't conventional enough and the model wasn't able to create the look of the '60's beauty' (Marilyn Monroe)

This is my final image:

After taking this image i notcied there was a vintage feel to the image. The pose, lighting and content of the image looks like images used in the Golden Age of Hollywood. This gave me a different idea. This was to create a retro satyle magazine, including both 'retor' music as well as modern music considered to have a retro sound. this will challenge me not to just create a music magazine that looks coventional, but to still relate to the genre of music choosen. This choice of genre has given me a USP (unique selling point) as there isnt a large number of magazines that include this idea. This is pushing against the Ziegiest of magazines at this present time, as it is considered to be either pop magazines or rock features. When creating my magazine i will continue to look at Q as they use strong images to create a 'good look.' I will have to do this to create a retro yet modern look to my magazine. As well as this, i will look at The Rolling Stone magazine as it is known to create some editions that play on the vintage look through the use of fonts, images and colours.

What do you look for in a magazine?

I devised a questionnaire where i asked 10 people that are interested in a music magazine based on 'retro' music. I asked them a variety of questions to give me insight of what i should aim to create in order to attract the reader.

Results: 5 women and 5 men participated in the questionnaire

Results:what artist are you into- Adele,The Beatles,Katy Perry,Amy Winehouse, Rebecca Ferguson,Rolling Stones,Queen, Mark Robinson, The Andrew Sisters, Billie Holiday.
- All of these answers varied. Some were actually 'retro' and some just has a 'retro' sound but modern.

Results: why do you read them? "Retro music", "more than just music", "good photography", "festivals."

Results:what do you want from this magazine? old music from old artists, new music with old sound, visual features to create a retro appeal and interviews with the artists.

The images

I took many images like this for  my front cover. I tried to portray the other band images I have seen. however i don't think it was a success. I don think the photograph had a professional look. Firstly, I didnt think the use of long shot worked as to much was in the shot. I tried cropping the image, but this didn't seem to improve it. I think the use of a group makes the image harder to capture as you have to create an atmosphere with the people to create the look of "closeness." I tried cropping the two people out, leaving one person on there own. Although this wasn't the best shot, it was an improvement.
Therefore I thought it would be best to  have a re-shoot, with just one person in order to crate one very strong and focused front cover image.

Although this picture looks better, it gives the look of an inside image of the magazine.I might use this for a front cover of an album featured in the magazine.

Looking at Girl Groups

Before shooting my front cover image, I wanted to research into the look of a girl group photo shoot.
I looked into the bands: Girls Aloud, Spice Girls,The Saturdays,Sugar Babes and Destiny's Child. Note: all are odd numbers, either groups of 3 or 5, works best. I will follow this idea.

All images seem to have the same idea. All to be individual yet together appear like a band. Girls ALoud all wear black, but have slightly different outfits demonstrating their personalities. All pictures,Spice Girls in particular show the close relationship, so i will use close proxemics to create this look.

Magazine Comparison

After looking into the themes of the magazines, i thought it be best to compare them to see how i could make my magazine different yet successful, yet still abiding by the codes and coinventions of these music magazines.

Rolling Stone- front cover

Q- front cover

NME- front cover

Research into The Rolling Stone

Unlike the other two magazines I have looked in to, Rolling Stone is a US based magazine whcih focuses on music, but other popular cultures. The magazine was founded in 1967 and since then politicial coverage has also been a part of the magazines features, and even today it is a big part of the magzines appeal to the varied target auidence.

The main music genre of the magaizne is rock and roll, as the title does relfect the music genre of the group called The Rolling Stones. However in recent years the genre of music included has become more varied including 'pop' like artisits. The target audience is worldwide and has a large demographic of a slightly older age group of 15-25 years.

Research into Q

Q was first published in October 1986, and was made puropsely to be aimed at an older generation of music buyees as the editiors thought they were 'left out.' However over the years Q is recognised to be one of the most popular music features in the UK.

Q is known for compiling lists. It has created many, ranging from "The 100 Greatest albums" to the "100 Greatest List" as well as the "100 Greatest Songs" and "100 Greatest Arttists."  These various countdowns include artists in all music genres. This widens the target auidience.
In recent years, the magazine had a revamp which altered the over all image to appear looking like The Rolling Stone magazine. which is another very popular music edition magazine.

Research into NME

NME (New Musical Express) is a British Magazine which is a popular  music publication that was launched since March 1952. The NME magazine, as well as channel and radio station are all owned by Time Inc subsidiary of the media conglomerate Time Warner.

The magazine has a target audience is primarily elder teenagers ranging from 15-19 years of age.
The magazine includes a wide range of music genres, rock, indie and hip hop are just a few intrests that are captured. NME is the place where the followers get their fix of music news, reviews, charts, tours and festivals.

The target audience is primarily elder teenagers ranging from 15-19 years of age.
